This will keep the blades at least 7 feet off the ground. For every two inches of ceiling clearance below this minimum airflow through the fan decreases by as much as 25 percent. If your ceiling is at least 8 high you may want to consider a fan with a short downrod rather than a flush mounted fan. For safety the bottom of the fan needs to be at least 7 feet above the floor.

Most ceilings are 8 feet high. So whatever your ceiling height is in feet buy a downrod that will put the top base of the fan at 10 feet. You will want your new ceiling fan to hang between 8 and 9 above the floor regardless of ceiling height. Most ceiling fans come ready to install on an 8 ceiling.

Conversely spaces in the home with limited ceiling to floor height think bedrooms offices breakfast nooks etc require a low profile or flushmount ceiling fan. For adequate air circulation the fan blades should hang 8 inches or more from the ceiling.

However some manufacturers will include a 6 inch downrod.
